Singer-songwriter David Roter comes off like Lenny Bruce with an electric guitar, or some unholy confluence of Woody Allen and Lou Reed. He relates absurd, comic tales of middle-aged New York intellectual neurosis backed by a hard-hitting band that includes members of the Dictators, the Del-Lords and Blue Oyster Cult (for whom Roter penned the infamous "Joan Crawford Has Risen From The Grave").
Against a backdrop of roaring, Ramonesy guitars and pounding drums, Roter paints bizarre scenarios including a lustful encounter with the ghost of a former First Lady ("I Think I Slept With Jackie Kennedy") and the events leading up to the arrest of James Brown ("Mr. Good Foot"). No matter how unusual the subject matter, Roter's gut-busting humor rests on a bed of honest emotion and unsentimental sincerity. This rare combination makes it possible for him to convincingly deliver a couplet like "I lost my virginity the day Kennedy died/I was happy and sad at the same time so I laughed until I cried." What could we possibly add to that?
