SEARCH HELP
Finding what you want is so easy, it’s scary. For CDs & DVDs just use the Quick search at the top of the page, or for more power, use the advanced search. For Classical Music click on the classical search button.
PLEASE NOTE: Our search engine is not case-sensitive. If you type words using all capitals, all lower-case letters - even if you use some wacky combination of the two - your search will still go through.
quick The quick search is always at your beck and call. Whenever you feel the need, just move your cursor to the search box at the top of any page. You can search by Artist, Song or CD/DVD Title.
artist (or artist keyword)
To search by artist, click on the arrow on the right of the empty Search box and drag your cursor down to the 'Artist' line (If it's not already in there). Next, click on the empty search box (If you've conducted a previous search, the search words you used will still be in this box. Just use your mouse to hilight the text, then type the new search words over the old.) A flashing vertical cursor line should appear. Type in the name of the artist, then click on the 'go' button. If you only know part of the name, don’t worry. Type in what you know, and the Search will bring up a list of names from which you can choose (sorted alphabetically, the list will contain all Artist names containg the text you typed in). Click on the name of the artist you want. A Discography of the artist’s albums will appear.
If you’d like to take a look at the individual album, just click on the album title or cover. Presto! The details page will appear.
At this point you’ll usually find...
- Album info such as price (in red if it's on sale), label and release date
- Album cover art
- A 'buy' (or 'preorder' if it's not released yet) button to add the album to the Shopping Cart
- Links to add the album to your Wishlist
- A list of songs

advanced search
You’ll find a link to the advanced search page to the right of the search box, where you’ll be able to search by any combination of Artist, Guest Artist, CD Title, Album Title Keyword, Producer, Year of Release, Song Title, or Song Keyword. [HANDY HINT: If you’re not sure of the exact name of the Artist or Song use the Quick search first. Please read the Quick search section of this page for complete details.]
Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re looking for all the albums on which Tom Petty appears as producer. Just click on the 'Producer' field and enter 'Tom Petty'. Now click on the 'go' button. Not only will you find a list of all the Tom Petty albums Tom Petty himself has produced, you’ll also find albums by Stevie Nicks and Del Shannon. To order any of these albums, just click on the title line. Click on ‘Buy’ button to add the album to your Shopping Cart. From the detail page of the Stevie Nicks (or Del Shannon) album, you can also jump to a complete list of the Stevie Nicks’ (or Del Shannon’s) albums - just click on the 'Discography' link.
Not sure of the exact name of an album or song? No problem. You can use a 'keyword' (one of the main words in the title). For example, if you’re looking for the album that has that song by the Cowboy Junkies - something 'Angel', here’s what you do: Click on the 'Song Title Keyword' field and enter the word 'angel'. Now click on the 'search' button (there's a lot of songs to search through, so this might take up to thirty seconds or so). Voilá! The search calls up a list of a whole bunch of songs with the word 'angel' in the title, complete with the artist and album title. From here you can scroll through until you find the Cowboy Junkies. Or, you could click on the link at the bottom of the page to refine your search. You'll go back to the advanced search page with the 'Song Title Keyword' field containing the word 'angel'. Click in the 'Artist' box and type in 'Cowboy Junkies' (or even just 'cowboy') and hit the 'search' button. You'll get a list of anyof the Cowboy Junkies' albums containing versions of that song. Click on the album title to go to the album detail page. If you want to purchase the album, just click on the 'Buy' button.
HANDY HINT: If the various search keywords you have aren’t calling up the album or song that you want, send all the information you have about the music you want in an e-mail to sounds.like@mymusic.com. We’re really good at piecing together musical puzzles.
Wondering what’s offered under the 'Format' section? Here’s the answer. You can choose the default entry ('All Formats'), or you can restrict your search to one of the following categories: CD, ECD (Enhanced CD), Gold Disc, Single, Maxi-Single, EP, Box Sets, SACD, DTS or DVD-Audio.
classical search
The classical search is much like the advanced search. The first thing you need to do is click on the Classical Search link to the right of the Advanced Search link. With this search engine, you will be able to find albums using any combination of the following fields: Composition (the title of the piece), Soloist, Ensemble, Record Label, Composer, Conductor, Instrument, Composition Type (e.g. Opera) and Album Title.
Some things to keep in mind when using the Classical Search:
- Broad searches are usually the most successful, so try using only one or two of the Search fields (ie. Composition and Conductor). This is especially helpful when you only know the name of the piece that you like. Use the Composition field. If you know the name of the Composer, enter that as well. For example, if you’re very fond of Prokofiev’s 'Montagues and Capulets' piece from Romeo and Juliet, enter 'Montagues and Capulets' in the Composition field and ‘Prokofiev’ in the Composer field. After you click on the 'search' button, you’ll be able to browse through a list of every recording of 'Montagues and Capulets' - not just those found on recordings of Romeo and Juliet, but also the performances that appear on collections of various composers’ pieces.
- When using the Composer, Soloist, or Conductor fields, enter only the individual’s last name. For example, enter 'Bartoli' instead of 'Cecilia Bartoli'; 'Holst' instead of 'Gustav Holst'; or 'Herreweghe' instead of 'Philippe Herreweghe'.
- When using the Ensemble field, enter only the main words of the name - don’t bother typing in common words like 'the' and 'of'.
- Often, a major record company will have several divisions (e.g. EMI Classics Red Line). It is helpful to know the exact name of the label you need when it comes to the major labels - this way you can avoid scrolling through a long list of albums that you don’t need at the moment.
